Marketing to Friends Versus Marketing to Strangers

I’m generally a big fan of Seth Godin. He makes sense of complicated matters for a novice like me, and even manages to makes it interesting. A post he wrote today really jumped out at me — reading it, all I could think was “Oh, that’s exactly what we’ve been doing all of these crazy months at Martini.” Leave it to Seth, he managed to clarify something we’ve already been doing as part of the Martini Team. Specifically, he points out the importance to marketing to people as if they’re friends, not strangers.

A great quote: “You need to treat friends differently at every step along the way. First, don’t confuse the moments you’re supporting them or connecting with them with the moments when you are doing business. Second, understand that the most powerful win is when your friends tell their friends about you. This is worth 1000 times more than you talking about yourself.”

We talk to potential clients as if we wish to get to know them because we do. Our business is such a collaborative effort that we have to take the time to make people understand us, want to understand us, and want to be a part of it.

A great insight overall. Check out the full post here.

Cheers,

Lauren
